Australia is currently facing a national crisis in what many argue are the worst bushfires in a generation. Communities have been totally devasted throughout the country, and many of Australia’s beloved animals are facing the potential that their entire habitat will be wiped out.  

So far residents of affected communities have been left with no choice but to abandon their homes and it is feared that over 500 million animals have perished in the fires. Local charities and zoos have been doing all they can to help and treat injured wildlife and the have been countless fundraisers set up across social media. In addition, Bindi Irwin has announced that her family’s institution, the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital has opened its doors to affected wildlife and has already treated more than 90,000 animals.

Bindi Irwin, 21, took to her official Instagram account in order to inform the public of what the hospital is currently doing:

“With so many devastating fires within Australia, my heart breaks for the people and wildlife who have lost so much. I wanted to let you know that we are SAFE. There are no fires near us @AustraliaZoo or our conservation properties.” she continued, “Our Wildlife Hospital is busier than ever though, having officially treated over 90,000 patients. My parents dedicated our Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital to my beautiful grandmother. We will continue to honor her by being Wildlife Warriors and saving as many lives as we can.”

This news will be welcomed by the public as only a few days ago we saw a video of a large number of kangaroos feeling fires currently devasting land in New South Wales. This video was taken by Mitchell Lyons who recently told the Australian Mirror: “Look, they don't know which way to run from cars, but they sure know which way to run from fire."

Lyons went on to say that the kangaroos likely fled fires that were raging about 6 miles away and suggested the kangaroo’s had come out of the bush looking for something to drink.

The current Australian bushfires have been burning in southeast Australia since December and have already displaced countless families from their homes. So far, it has been reported that fifteen people have been killed by the fires and many more are still missing.

news.com.au have also reported that the bushfires are thought to have already killed over 500 million wild animals and it is feared that Koalas may soon become extinct as their entire habitat has likely been destroyed.
